Florida Springs Series: Part 1 β€” 6 Springs, 6 Months, 900 Reasons to Keep Exploring

Florida Has 900+ Springs. We're Starting With 6 β€” Here's Why.

Florida is home to more than 900 freshwater springs β€” the most of any state on earth. You could spend a lifetime exploring them and still find something new around every bend. We're not going to pretend six months covers it all. But every great adventure has to start somewhere. This is ours β€” and we hope it becomes yours too.

Welcome to Part 1 of the FLA Coastal Florida Springs Series β€” a 6-month travel plan, one spring per month, six unforgettable adventures through the real Florida. Whether you're a native, a transplant, or a visitor planning the ultimate Florida road trip, this series was made for you.

Month 1 Spotlight: Chassahowitzka & The Seven Sisters Springs

We're kicking off Part 1 with one of Florida's most magical and least-visited spring systems β€” Chassahowitzka (locals call it "Chaz") and the legendary Seven Sisters Springs. Tucked along the Nature Coast in Citrus County, this is old Florida at its most pristine.

The Chassahowitzka River winds through a labyrinth of spring-fed channels, mangroves, and wildlife-rich backwaters that feel completely untouched. The Seven Sisters Springs β€” a cluster of spring vents that bubble up from the limestone floor β€” are accessible only by kayak or canoe, which means the crowds stay away and the magic stays intact.

  • Best for: Kayaking, snorkeling, manatee watching, wildlife photography, solitude
  • Location: Homosassa, FL (Citrus County) β€” right in FLA Coastal's backyard on the Nature Coast
  • Water temp: 72Β°F year-round
  • Manatees: Present year-round, most abundant November–March
  • Access: By kayak or canoe only β€” no motorized boats at the springs themselves
  • Pro tip: Launch from Chassahowitzka River Campground and paddle about 2 miles downriver to reach the Seven Sisters. Give yourself a full day.

What to Pack for a Florida Springs Adventure

The springs are 72Β°F year-round β€” refreshing in summer, chilly in winter. Here's what we recommend:

  • A quality rash guard or performance top for sun protection on the water
  • Quick-dry shorts or leggings β€” you'll be in and out of the water all day
  • Water shoes for rocky spring bottoms
  • Reef-safe sunscreen (protect those springs!)
  • A dry bag for your phone and valuables
  • A kayak or canoe β€” especially for Chaz & the Seven Sisters

At FLA Coastal, we design our apparel for exactly these kinds of days β€” built for the water, the sun, and the Florida lifestyle that anyone can claim as their own. 🌊
